In 2009–10, the number of employment tribunal claims rose by a huge 56 per cent compared with 2008–09 – leading to a huge increase in costs and time spent for all the companies involved (time and money that could be invested on other, more valuable activities).

The average award for unfair dismissal in 2009–10 was £9,120, while the same year also saw the highest ever award given for disability discrimination (£729,347) and other significant race discrimination awards (the highest was £374,922).
